Com’era facile aspettarsi, in pochissimo tempo gli sviluppatori del settore sono riusciti nell’impresa di avere i permessi di root sul nuovo Samsung Galaxy SIII, nonché installare la famosa recovery modificata ClockWorkMod.
Il procedimento potrà risultare piuttosto facile ai più esperti, anche se a tutti ricordiamo che tutto ciò invalida la garanzia e comporta sempre una certa dose di rischi in caso di errore, quindi eseguite il tutto sotto la vostra totale responsabilità.
La guida è stata pubblicata da Chainfire sul forum di XDA Developers, e trovate il link al post originale in fondo all’articolo: noi ci siamo limitati solamente a tradurre dall’originale in lingua inglese, non potendo testare di persona non avendo un GS3 a dispositizione. Detto questo, vediamo come procedere.

- Computer Windows (meglio se un portatile alimentato a batteria)
- Samsung Galaxy SIII con la batteria completamente carica
- Odin – Link Download
- Archivio CF-SGS3-CWM-v5.5-v1.0.zip – Link Download
- Archivio CWM-SuperSU-v0.89.zip – Link Download
Guida
- Scaricate Odin dal link sopra, quindi estraete i due file sul desktop.
- Scaricate l’archivio CF-SGS3-CWM-v5.5-v1.0.zip ed estraetene il contenuto sul desktop. All’interno sarà contenuto il file CF-SGS3-CWM-v5.5-v1.0.tar, e ci raccomandiamo di NON ESTRARRE nulla questa volta, il file .tar dovrà rimanere così com’è.
- Se avete collegato il GS3 al computer, scollegatelo e spegnetelo, quindi avviate Odin.
- Fate click sul pulsante PDA e selezionate il file CF-SGS3-CWM-v5.5-v1.0.tar estratto in precedenza.
- Se non lo avete ancora fatto, spegnete il vostro device ed entrate in download mode: per farlo, da telefono spento, premete contemporaneamente i tasti Volume Giù + Home + Power e, se richiede di premere un tasto qualunque per continuare, premete Volume Su.
- Collegare tramite cavo USB il GS3 al computer ed attendere che venga riconosciuto da Odin (lo capirete dal primo rettangolino del programma, che diventerà giallo).
- Assicurarsi che la voce Repartition NON sapuntata.
- Quando siete sicuri, premere il pulsante Start per avviare il procedimento, quindi attenderne il termine ed il riavvio del terminale (è chiaro che NON dovrete scollegare il GS3 dal computer per nessun motivo!).
- Adesso la recovery CWM sarà installata sul vostro Galaxy SIII, e non ci resta che ottenere i permessi di root su di esso: per prima cosa scaricate il file CWM-SuperSU-v0.89.zip ma questa volta NON estraete nulla, dovrà rimanere così com’è.
- Copiate il file CWM-SuperSU-v0.89.zip all’interno della vostra scheda SD, possibilmente nella directory principale.
- Spegnete nuovamente il device ed entrate in recovery mode: per farlo, da telefono spento, premete i tasti Volume Su + Home + Power e rilasciate Power dopo un secondo mantenendo premuti gli altri.
- Per chi non sapesse muoversi all’interno della recovery, ecco un piccolo schema del funzionamento dei pulsanti: Volume Su = SU, Volume Giù = GIÙ, Power/Home = CONFERMA. Indietro = INDIETRO. Grazie a questi movimenti selezionate la voce “install zip from sdcard“, quindi “choose zip from sdcard” ed infine selezionate il file CWM-SuperSU-v0.89.zip.
- Attendete il termine delle operazioni per avere anche i permessi di root sul vostro Galaxy SIII.

Here’s my port of CWM 5.5.0.4 to the SGS3. There’s a second version number in the thread title, as I think there will be multiple versions.
As is the case with every SGS release (it happened with the SGS1 and the SGS2, and now again with the SGS3), CWM source isn’t built to correctly deal with our setup (internal storage vs sdcard). I had to make a number of changes to the source to get it working correctly. From my tests, it all seems to work, but it’s quite possible I missed something (report issues).
(I have tested backup/restore to both internal and external storage, wipes, installing zips from both internal and external, etc, all works as I expect it to)
Aside from the base fixes, there is currently nothing fancy about this build of CWM. I’m not sure if the SGS3 suffers from the brick bug (that SGS2 and Note have), but I patched out the relevant code to be sure (I think). Backups are rather big, system alone is about a GB.
I’ll do more some other day!
Instructions – Short
Extract the attached CF-SGS3-CWM-vX.X-vY.Y zip file, to get the tar file you can flash in Odin as PDA.
Instructions – Long
- Follow these instructions to the letter. Do not touch any buttons or checkboxes that are not listed below to touch!
- Unzip the attached Odin3-vX.X.zip file
- Unzip the attached CF-SGS3-CWM-vX.X-vY.Y.zip file
- If you end up with a recovery.img file, you’ve extracted twice. You need to end up with a .tar file – don’t extract that one
- (USB) Disconnect your phone from your computer
- Start Odin3-vX.X.exe
- Click the PDA button, and select CF-SGS3-CWM-vX.X-vY.Y.tar
- Put your phone in download mode (turn off phone, then hold volume-down + home + power to boot – if it asks you to press a button to continue, press the listed button)
- (USB) Connect the phone to your computer
- Make sure Repartition is NOT checked
- Click the Start button
- Wait for the phone to reboot
- Done (if it took you more than 30 seconds, you need practise!)Navigation
In recovery, use the volume buttons to move up/down, power or home button to select, and back to go back.
Rooting
Applying root once you have this recovery installed is easy.
- Go to the SuperSU thread and download the CWM-SuperSU-…zip file attached to the first post
- Put the zip file on your sdcard (either internal storage or external sdcard will do)
- Put your phone in recovery mode (turn off phone, then hold volume-up + home + power to boot – release power after one second) – Alternatively, use the “adb reboot recovery” command
- Select “install zip from sdcard”
- Select “choose zip from sdcard” or “choose zip from internal sdcard” (depending on where you put the zip)
- Select the CWM-SuperSU-…zip file
- Done !
